Learning how to play Texas Hold’Em Poker is extremely easy and should take you only a few minutes. Mastering the game on the other hand is a long and arduous process.
No one can become a master at playing Texas Hold’Em Poker without first learning the rules of the game. Only by learning how to properly play the game can we eventually master it.
The first thing you must now about Texas Hold’Em Poker is that there are three variations of this game:
- Limit (Fixed Limit) Texas Hold’Em Poker
This variation of Texas Hold’Em Poker has a specific limit that applies to the bets. The bets in each game and each round must not exceed the limit.
- Pot Limit Texas Hold’Em Poker
In this variation of Texas Hold’Em Poker a player can bet what is in the pot.
- No Limit Texas Hold’Em Poker
In this variation of Texas Hold’Em Poker a player can bet all of his chips at any time.
Now that you are familiar with the three different types of Texas Hold’Em Poker it is time to move on to the rules. There are several Texas Hold’Em Poker rules and we will cover all of them, step by step. All you have to do is keep on reading.
Texas Hold’Em Poker uses a dealer-button. This button indicates who the dealer for each hand is. This button will move clockwise after a hand will be completed. All the players will get to be the dealer at least once. The purpose of the button is to show or remind you who the dealer of the round is.
Let us now proceed to more specific Texas Hold’Em Poker rules.
Keep in mind that all the information presented below is intended for beginner players. This does not mean you cannot re-read it in order to refresh your knowledge of Texas Hold’Em Poker rules.
Step One: before the flop
Before the game begins a player must be chosen to act as the dealer. The first person sitting at the table will be the dealer and the next player will have to post the small blind bet. The dealer-button indicates who the dealer for each hand is and will move clockwise after a hand will be completed. The player next to the dealer will always be the one placing the small blind bet.
A small blind bet is usually equal in value to half the lower stake. This is more a guideline than a precise rule of the game.
There is also a big blind bet. This bet must be made by the player sitting to the left of the small blind. A big blind bet is usually equal in value to the lower stake limit.
When playing Texas Hold’Em Poker you must remember that all blind bets are considered live bets. You will have the option of checking, calling, raising, or folding when it will be your turn to wager.
Cards will be dealt after the blinds bets have been made. The dealer will give each active player two cards, face down. Face down cards are also known as hole cards.
The first round of betting will now begin. The betting will start from the player to the left of the player that made the big blind bet. Each player will now be able to make his bets in the first round. These bets are set to the lower limit of the stakes structure.
Let’s take a look at an example in order to understand this better. Let’s say that you are playing a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game and the value of each bet is $10 for the first round. This is what we mean by saying that the bets are limited to $10:
- If you “Bet” you will automatically place a single bet of $10;
- If you “Raise” you will automatically call the previous bet of $10 and place a raise of another $10. You will have to wager a total of $20.
You can wager by using the Bet, Call, and Raise options. Folding is also an option. Depending on the action of the previous player you will have the opportunity to use all these betting options.
In the first round, the player standing to the left of the big blind will get to place the first bet. He can use the Bet, Call, and Raise options. The players following can use the Call and Raise options.
Calling means that you want to place a wager equal in value to the wager placed by the previous player.
Raising your bet means increasing the amount wagered by the previous player. You must call his bet by placing the same betting amount as he did and increase that with and additional raise amount.
All the players participating in the game should wager an amount equal in value to the one placed by the previous player. This includes bets, calls and raises. The betting will continue until all the players have placed equal amounts in the pot.
A betting round has certain limitations when it comes number of bets a player can make and the amounts regarding those bets. All the hands also have such limitations.
After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the flop. This is when the dealer will place three cards on the table. These cards are dealt face up and are community cards. Community cards refer to the fact that any player can use community cards to make up a poker hand.
Step two: after the flop and before the turn or 4th street
The player that gets to bet first is the one to the left of the button. He will be the first to bet not only after the flop but also in every round following the flop.
During this second round of betting certain betting limitations have to be respected. The value of all the bets and all the raise bets are restricted to the lower limit of the stake structure. If you are playing a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the value of each bet must be $10 in the second round of betting.
This is what we mean by saying that the bets are limited to $10:
- If you “Bet” you will automatically place a single bet of $10;
- If you “Raise” you will automatically call the previous bet of $10 and place a raise of another $10. You will have to wager a total of $20.
You can wager by using the Bet, Call, and Raise options. Folding is also an option. Depending on the action of the previous player you will have the opportunity to use all these betting options.

Raising your bet means increasing the amount wagered by the previous player. You must call his bet by placing the same betting amount as he did and increase that with and additional raise amount.
After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the turn or 4th street. This is when the dealer will place a forth card on the table, face up.
Step three: after the turn and before the river
The player that gets to bet first is the one to the left of the button. He will be the first to bet in every round following the flop.
During this third round of betting certain betting limitations have to be respected. The value of all the bets and all the raise bets are restricted to the upper limit of the stake structure. If you are playing a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the value of each bet must be $20 in the third round of betting.

After all the players have finished making their bets it is time for the river. This is when the dealer will place a fifth card on the table, face up.
Step four: after the river, the final round
This is the final betting round. The player that gets to bet first is the one to the left of the button.
During this forth round of betting certain betting limitations have to be respected. The value of all the bets and all the raise bets are restricted to the upper limit of the stake structure. If you are playing a $10 / $20 Hold’Em game the value of each bet must be $20 in the forth round of betting.

You can wager by using the Bet, Call, and Raise options. Folding is also an option. Depending on the action of the previous player you will have the opportunity to use all these betting options.
In the forth round, the player standing to the left of the button will get to place the first bet.
After all the players have finished making their bets it is time to determine the winner. The player with the strongest poker hand will win and get the pot. The round and the hand are over.
